Artificial Intelligence

Simply put, Artificial Intelligence means intelligence that is generated artificially. Scientists achieve this by programming machines to think like humans and mimic human action. This term can also be used to describe machines that possess certain traits associated with the human mind, such as learning and problem-solving.

When people think of artificial intelligence, they often think of robots because of various sci-fi movies that portray robots as intelligent beings that act and think like human beings. However, robots are only a small part of the application of AI.

It is based on the principle that a certain amount of human intelligence can be defined and encoded to be easily mimicked by machines to execute different tasks. AI aims to replicate human cognitive processes to execute certain tasks and solve problems.

According to experts, there will be a time when AI will become advanced enough to exceed the capacity of the human mind, and its ability to solve problems and carry out tasks will enhance over time. Others believe that machines will be able to replicate human intelligence in the future.

With the advancements in technology, what was once considered AI is now just an inherent functionality in computers. In one interview, Elon Musk stated, “AI doesn’t have to be evil to destroy humanity. If AI has a goal, and humanity just happens to come in the way, it will destroy humanity as a matter of course without even thinking about it, no hard feelings.”

Classification of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence can be classified into two broad categories:

Weak Artificial Intelligence

Weak Artificial Intelligence is a system that is designed to perform one particular task. It is also called narrow AI because it is limited to a limited scope as far as functionality is concerned. It can mimic human cognition only for the tasks and activities they have been programmed to complete.

It has the potential to drive innovation and benefit human society by improving the efficiency of machines and automating time-consuming tasks. However, they differ from the humanoid robots that are portrayed in sci-fi movies. They lack human consciousness.

Few examples of Weak AI are Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, and spam filters in Gmail.

Strong Artificial Intelligence

Strong Artificial Intelligence or Strong AI, on the other hand, is the technology that enables computers to execute tasks and solve problems like a human.

It is a theoretical form of machine intelligence that equals human intelligence in reasoning, solving puzzles, planning, making judgements, learning and communicating, etc. This form of machine intelligence has consciousness, self-awareness, and the ability to think by itself.

Some experts believe that a machine that possesses Strong AI should be able to go through the process of development like human beings. They can gradually develop by acquiring new skills and learning new things.

Weak AI can only simulate human cognition. In contrast, Strong AI has human cognition. Machines with strong AI can theoretically solve any problem using human-like capabilities. This leads to various possibilities, which will change how humans interact with machines. We can even have humanoid robots in the future.

Machine Learning

We cannot learn about Artificial Intelligence without Machine Learning. Machine Learning is a concept where a machine can learn and adapt to new ideas with the intervention or guidance of human beings. Machine Learning ( ML) is a branch of Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify patterns, and make quick decisions with minimum human intervention.

This is achieved by installing complex sets of algorithms in the machine or computer. The algorithm creates a model in the computer that enables it to identify various data and make predictions based on the data. The model uses the parameters within the algorithm to form patterns that help in the decision-making process.

Machine Learning has several uses and applications. Some of them are as follows:

  • By enabling machine learning in trading systems, you can identify new business opportunities.
  • It enables Amazon and other e-commerce sites to give personalised recommendations to their customers.
  • Lending institutions can build risk models based on machine learning.


Robotics is an interdisciplinary field of science and engineering dedicated to designing, constructing, and using mechanical robots. Robots are machines that are designed using the principles of science, engineering and technology. These machines can mimic and perform human-like actions and assist human beings in performing various tasks.

Robots have been the focal point in the process of automation. According to experts, robotics will be so advanced in the future that it will completely dominate the economy.

Robotics is a diverse branch. So, students can specialise in various sub-branches of robotics. Moreover, experts believe that this field has immense growth potential. Hence, kids need to learn about AI and robotics to prepare themselves for the future.

As data comes from the users, students need to know how to fetch, store and analyse the data. They can develop their projects based on that data.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are opening up new opportunities. Students who know AI, ML and robotics will have several job opportunities in the future.
All the industries will be increasingly dependent on AI, ML and robotics for carrying out their operations.
